DHSUD to intensify drive against real estate scams

THE Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) has formed a specialized body to craft measures to stop illegal activities in the housing industry.

Under Special Order No. 2021-02, the DHSUD will form a technical working group (TWG) that will work with concerned government agencies and revisit all relevant laws, rules and regulations.

The TWG will then formulate a Joint Memorandum Circular “for a whole-government approach to address the illicit activities in the real estate sector.”

Housing Secretary Eduardo D. del Rosario last year said that he would expand the campaign against illegal developers and illegitimate real estate sellers to protect home buyers, including overseas Filipino workers.

Real estate dealers cannot sell subdivision lots or condominium units without registering with the department, according to Presidential Decree No. 957.

“We need to put a stop to these illegal activities through institutionalized proactive efforts in collaboration with our stakeholders, national and local government units, law enforcement agencies, including legitimate developers, who are also victims of these scammers,” Mr. Del Rosario said in a statement on Sunday.

The TWG will also recommend guidelines on the potential partnership among government agencies. — Jenina P. Ibañez
